Pre & Post Care Guide

Waxing & Sugaring

Learn how to prepare for waxing and sugaring and how to care for your skin afterward to minimize irritation, support healthy regrowth, and help prevent ingrowns.

Waxing & Sugaring Pre & Post Care

Waxing and sugaring remove hair from the root, which means your skin needs a little extra care before and after your appointment.

Your skin may be temporarily more sensitive, your pores may appear more noticeable, and the treated area may experience mild redness or irritation. Proper preparation and aftercare can help minimize irritation, reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs, and help you maintain smoother results between appointments.

Whether you are receiving a facial wax, bikini or Brazilian service, full body waxing, or sugaring, these guidelines will help you prepare and care for your skin.

Before Your Appointment

  • Hair Length: Hair should be approximately the length of a grain of rice, about 1/4 inch, for the product to properly grip the hair. Hair that is too short may not remove cleanly, while hair that is excessively long may be more uncomfortable.
  • Don't Shave: Stop shaving, trimming, or plucking the area approximately 2–3 weeks before your appointment. Consistent waxing or sugaring allows us to work with the natural hair-growth cycle.
  • Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate the area 24–48 hours before your appointment. This helps remove excess dead skin cells and can help lift hairs that may otherwise become trapped.
  • Exercise: Working out before your appointment is generally fine. Avoid arriving immediately after an intense workout while you are excessively sweaty or overheated.
  • Sexual Activity: Avoid sexual activity for approximately 48 hours before intimate waxing or sugaring appointments. Friction and increased sensitivity can make the service more uncomfortable.
  • Sun Exposure: Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds before your appointment. We cannot safely wax or sugar sunburned, peeling, or highly sensitized skin.
  • Hydration: Drink water normally leading up to your appointment.
  • Caffeine & Alcohol: If you are sensitive to waxing or sugaring, consider limiting caffeine and alcohol for several hours before your appointment, as they may increase sensitivity for some people.
  • Pain Relief: If you regularly use an over-the-counter pain reliever for waxing discomfort, follow the product's directions and check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are unsure whether it is appropriate for you.
  • Day-of Arrival: Shower before your appointment and arrive with clean skin. Do not apply heavy lotions, body oils, deodorant, perfumes, or numbing creams to the treatment area.

The First 48 Hours

Waxing and sugaring temporarily leave the treated area more vulnerable to irritation and friction. Your goal during the first 48 hours is simple:

Keep it clean, cool, dry, and hands off.

Avoid the 4 S's:

  • Sweat: Avoid heavy workouts, excessive sweating, saunas, and steam rooms. For intimate waxing or sugaring, avoid sexual activity during this period as well.
  • Sun: Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds and spray tans.
  • Soaking: Skip hot baths, hot tubs, pools, beaches, and lakes. Stick with cool or lukewarm showers. You may shower approximately 6–8 hours after your service unless otherwise instructed.
  • Scented Products: Avoid perfumes, heavily fragranced lotions, deodorants, chemical exfoliants, and other potentially irritating products on the treated area.

Additional Tips During This Phase

  • Wear Loose Clothing: Choose breathable clothing that minimizes friction against freshly treated skin.
  • Let Your Skin Breathe: For intimate services, sleeping without underwear may help reduce overnight friction if you are comfortable doing so.
  • Keep Your Hands Clean: Only touch the treated area with freshly washed hands.
  • Cool Compress: If the area feels warm, swollen, or irritated, a cool compress may provide comfort.
  • Do Not Pick: Small bumps, redness, or temporary irritation can occur. Do not squeeze, scratch, or pick at the area.
  • Avoid At-Home Treatments: Do not immediately apply scrubs, acids, strong acne products, or other corrective treatments unless specifically recommended.

What Is Normal After Waxing or Sugaring?

Some temporary reactions are normal, particularly if you are new to waxing or sugaring.

You may experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Small bumps around the hair follicles
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Mild swelling
  • Warmth
  • Tenderness
  • Slight itching as the skin settles
  • Temporary histamine related reactions

These reactions should generally settle as your skin calms.

If you experience significant pain, blistering, extensive swelling, signs of infection, or a reaction that concerns you, contact your healthcare provider.
